Pero con la pandemia, estos canales de mercado desaparecieron y con ellos, los ingresos de muchos artesanos.

The Cotzocán pants are a piece of cotton woven on a waist loom by weavers from the Mixe region of Oaxaca, in collaboration with Mano Madre para Ensamble Artesano. The edges bear the symbol of the stars that can be seen from the Zempoaltépetl hill, a work loaded with the worldview of the artisans who continue to follow pre-Hispanic traditions.

El objetivo principal es fortalecer el trabajo y la actividad artesanal de mujeres y hombres que fueron afectados por la incertidumbre económica después del confinamiento y las restricciones de distanciamiento social implementadas en México.

Gracias a la generosidad de fundaciones y organizaciones que recaudan fondos para reactivar y promover la producción artesanal en México, Ensamble Artesano — en colaboración con 36 Organizaciones Aliadas que trabajan formalmente con grupos artesanales — pudo financiar la producción de una colección de edición limitada.

There are initiatives that change lives, and Ensamble Artesano is one of them. In the midst of the contingency caused by COVID-19, artisans faced the harsh reality of pausing sales throughout Mexico.
In response, and thanks to donations, Ensamble Artesano had the opportunity to extend a helping hand to co-create a collection with over 15,000 pieces made by artisans from 18 states of the Republic.

In 2020, in the midst of the crisis caused by COVID-19, Ensamble Artesano was born, a project that aimed to rescue the work of our artisans, create a space for exchange and collaboration between different artisanal groups, organizations, and designers, and face financial uncertainty.

Preserving our culture, as well as rescuing ancestral techniques for crafting handicrafts, were fundamental parts of this joint effort, which was joined by more than 36 organizations, led by Fundación Haciendas del Mundo Maya and Taller Maya in partnership with México Territorio Creativo, Design Week México, and Caralarga, with advice from Igeneris and the United Nations Development Programme in Mexico (UNDP).

One year after the health emergency was declared, Ensamble Artesano continues to gather collective efforts to respond to the economic effects on the artisanal sector due to the COVID-19 lockdown in Mexico.

The path that the initiative has taken has responded to the sense of urgency to reactivate the economy of thousands of women and men who in 2020 saw their ability to commercialize popular art pieces, which represent the preservation of part of our country‘s cultural heritage and the engine of their family economy, compromised.

The COVID-19 pandemic affected many industries. The artisanal sector was not exempt and thousands of artisans nationwide saw their economic income reduced. When the artisanal sector enters into crisis, not only do the families that make it up suffer, but there is also a risk of losing techniques that have been part of our culture for years and are a vestige of indigenous communities. During the pandemic, Esnamble Artesano was born out of the need to give visibility to these techniques and offer artisans an ethical sales channel.

Mexican handicrafts, in addition to being part of our national identity, are our greatest representative worldwide.

According to data from INEGI, there are just over seven million artisans in Mexico, of which 65% are women. It is worth noting that this sector contributes 132 billion pesos; that is, almost two out of every 10 pesos of the Gross Domestic Product of the cultural sector is generated by artisan hands. However, artisan work is constantly undervalued and the main way in which we do not recognize its value is through bargaining. Now, in times of the pandemic, unfortunately, the work of artisans has come to be worth the same as a bag of rice or "something for the pantry."

Ensamble Artesano is a social entrepreneurship platform that supports vulnerable artisan groups in the face of the COVID-19 contingency.
For more than 25 years, the Haciendas del Mundo Maya Foundation (FHMM) has worked with communities in the Yucatan Peninsula, promoting sustainable development in the southeastern region. When the business group of which it is a partner began restoring haciendas, it realized that the hacienda does not begin on the property but includes the community, and it turned to work on the development of those communities by forming FHMM.
